BATIDA - Dois

Portugese/Angolese musician Batida's (aka PEDRO COQUENÃO) new album 'Dois' features strands of Afro-House, Kuduro, Benga, Semba, samples from The Clash and old Angolan movies and Afrobeat tracks, African MCs and musicians from all over the world, all deftly mixed together.


Inspired by the multicultural hotbed of his home city of Lisbon and trips to Nairobi and back to Luanda. 'Dois' was predominately produced in his own garage-studio over a two-year period, His sophomore record has much of the remix and sampling spirit from his first, critically-acclaimed record, but also features live instrumentation along with a host of different guests.


Much of the English, Portuguese, Quicongo and Zulu languages all feature on 'Luxo' with Spoek Mathambo (South Africa) & his crew contributing the lyrics together with Angolan MC Sacerdote and a guitar riff by Duncan Lloyd (Maxïmo Park), On 'Céu' Batida pushes things in a deeper direction, dis-assembling and reforming elements of the Francois & The Atlas Mountains studio sessions of the track 'Les Plus Beaux'.


On the inspiration behind his work, the half Angolese and half Portuguese musician notes: "I was finding lots of new urban electronic stuff, but not much that was embracing the traditional elements, like hip-hop artists do, such as rapper Baloji who samples traditional Congolese sounds and rhythms, Conductor, MCK's producer and Conjunto Ngonguenha are doing similar things in Angola, but in the electronic dance music scene there was a huge gap between the traditional and the new."
